Hostage Tape initially relied on Klaviyo’s built-in pop-ups to capture email and SMS subscribers. While functional, these pop-ups lacked advanced design capabilities and customization, making it difficult to create a seamless, high-converting experience. The brand needed more flexibility to test different pop-up formats, introduce educational components, and optimize engagement—features Klaviyo simply didn’t offer.

We get a ton of traffic, but our opt-in percentage just wasn’t where it needed to be. We knew we were leaving subscribers—and revenue—on the table.

Beyond the design limitations, Hostage Tape also faced a major gap in conversion performance. Despite receiving 150K–200K visitors per month to their Shopify store, their opt-in rates were lower than expected. A large number of potential customers were leaving without subscribing, reducing the brand’s ability to nurture leads and drive long-term retention.

In addition, the brand’s customer acquisition strategy relied heavily on repeat purchases and retention. With a consumable product that needed regular replenishment, building a robust email and SMS list was critical to long-term success.
